COMING INTO TOWN ON A SUNDAY?

Doncaster Town Centre is much quieter on a Sunday than on other days of the week. In many ways that makes it a great day to visit...

Getting here

Bus and train services into Donny are reduced on a Sunday but are still plentiful – you just need to check the timetable.

The Civic Quarter and Colonnades car parks are closed on Sundays but the majority are still open including the convenient Frenchgate Centre multi storey. The best news is that all parking spaces managed by Doncaster Council are FREE all day on Sundays – including all on-street bays and the Chappell Drive, Church Way, St Georges, New Markets, Wood Street and Horsefair car parks.

Shopping

Doncaster has embraced Sunday Shopping big style over the last few years and now boasts more than 200 stores that regularly open on Sundays week in and week out – with more joining them, as you might expect in the run-up to Christmas.

Stores are generally much quieter than they are on Saturdays making for a far more relaxed shopping experience. Sunday is a good day for hunting down that something special and for trying on clothes without queues for the changing rooms.

Other things to do

The TIC, the Museum & Art Gallery and the Point are all currently closed on Sundays, which is a shame, but there’s still plenty to do.

The excellent Brevon Art gallery on Thorne Road - just behind Christ Church – is open every Sunday afternoon with exhibitions by local artists and designer-makers. And admission is free.

With fewer crowds and less traffic Sunday is a great day to look up above the shop fronts and admire Donny’s fine architecture. The streets are also full of fascinating public art – some of which are sculptures you can hardly miss such as at Sunny Bar and outside the Mansion House and some of which are actually built into the pavement and on busier days often go un-noticed.

Sunday’s also a good day to literally look into Donny’s future. A visit to the brand new Sir Nigel Gresley Square at Waterdale to admire the public art, the fantastic new fountain array and see the new performance venue currently under construction is a must.

Amenities

Plenty of coffee shops and cafes in the main shopping area open every Sunday and a number of restaurants and bars offer a traditional Sunday Lunch.

The public loos at the Markets are closed on Sundays but the facilities in the Frenchgate Centre, in the Interchange and in the department stores are all open as normal.

And finally
 
Sunday wouldn’t be Sunday without a reminder that Donny town centre is home to no fewer than a dozen places of worship ranging from the magnificent Minster to smaller churches representing the full range of traditions. Most have morning services and many have evening services too…
